Oh Freedom! Concert at the Carnegie Center for Art and History

Tuesday, February 26, 2019 | 6:00 PM

Free Admission. Registration is required. Register here.

Oh Freedom! is a special concert highlighting the role of music in African American culture, as performed by members of the Kentucky Opera. An inspirational demonstration of the ability of music to preserve and share history, the program begins with music from West Africa, travels through time to include coded spiritual songs sung by enslaved people, and ends with music that inspired the Civil Rights Movement. The title Oh Freedom! is inspired by the spiritual of the same name and was a favorite among Civil Rights activists.

Oh Freedom! is the first program in Songs & Stories of Freedom, a year-long series of programs interpreting the Underground Railroad and African American history through the power of the arts, including opera, acting, illustration and literature. Stay tuned for more events in 2019.

Songs & Stories of Freedom is made possible in part by a grant from
